I’m looking to remodel my very, very tiny bathroom in my apartment in New York City – but I don’t want a traditional "American" look. I’ve been noticing some really cool ideas on my last few trips to Europe and would really like to implement that "Chic, European" look here at home in the USA. One thing I noticed is, in Europe, they usually tile from floor to ceiling. Here in the states, except for the shower – we usually only tile 1/2 the wall.
Can you all please give me other ideas, suggestions, decorating tips, places that you know of that sell EUROPEAN or European stylebathroom fixtures (NOT "Home Depot"!!!! That’s exactly the look I don’t want.) I really need good answers.
My current situations is: I’m free to tile all I want. I cannot remove the tub because it is connected to the apartment next door – and removing it would destroy both tubs. So it must stay. Only have room for toilet, small counter with sink.
Please tell me how I can get that look here in the USA. Thank!
And before anyone cracks a joke about it – I think I will not go for the "Italian toilet" look. Like the rest of Europe – I prefer my toilet to have an actual toilet seat. As for the rest of the Italian bathrooms – they are quite beautiful with the glass counter tops instead of formica, (no stains!) and all of Europe – the have found not only a great way to use the limited space they have- but they make it look so darn cool and fun too! My bathroom just looks tiny and dull. Help! I want a fun, cool looking European bathroom!
Well having been to Italy a few times both the in the country and in the cities I know what you are talking about.
You know some very good examples of baths that have what are you are looking for can be found in old apartments right where you are. I would suggest looking in the newspaper and going to see apartments for rent in the older Italian area close to where you are.
The basic concept being simplicity and function using attractive materials.
Tile is the biggest common denominator between a village and city bath is tile. City baths having more marble and village baths having ceramic tile. A nice compromise is a white 4×6 tile layed in a "running bond" pattern (like bricks are layed) up about half way with a very decorative cap molding where it stops. White tile with a black molding is very elegant looking. And can be found it both types.
For the flooring using a "mosaic" tile (the little ones 1"x1" or 2"x2") with a nice yet simple border in-layed around the room perimeter will also achieve your look for older. Newer using marble with a marble floor molding up about 3"
If you stick with "real" materials, real wood, etc. it adds to the picture. City baths seem to have a much grater contrast in materials such as all white tile and dark stained cabinetry. I think for you bath it sounds like I would go with an all white them with chrome fixtures then add some vibrant colors for your tiles and accessories for a more chic look. and or the white and black I spoke of above. a lot of chrome is used also handles, faucets, levers, towel racks.
Unfortunately if you are looking for fixtures such as toilets or sinks they are going to have to be ordered form a specialty store at great expense. You might think of going to look around at a surplus fixture house for items that have been removed from older baths, I’m sure if you are in the city, city there are many at your disposal. I hope
We have sold the house and need to fix a small cabinet door that is under the sink in bathroom. It has cracked all the way down it.
Please help!
Well if it is wood, like most of them and painted you can sand the area then fill it with wood filler then re paint it. If its stained and Polyurethane it would be harder to fix but sand the area and fill it with wood filler and try to find a matching stain then stain it and polyurethane it. It it is a wide and big crack wood filler might not do it and might have to have that door replaced.
I hv basement with family room, bathroom, playroom, laundry room and but need a small kitchen. I dont hv much space left but I was thinking of remodeling in the laundry room because theres a window nearby. The space is 10 by 8. Right now it has full size washer/dryer and a large washing sink. Any suggestions!!!!!??????
I went to Ikea last year and found that they had a unit that has a hot plate, sink and mini-fridge combination. You could buy this along with some kind of tall cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. You could get one and arrange the shelves anyway you want. They have different door sizes and you could even have a built in microwave installed in the tall cabinet. So you can have food storage on top, built in microwave in the middle and pots and dishes below. You can also buy an 18" dishwasher and a 24" stove with oven. I had a stove like that before when I was starting out and I could cook everything on it. The oven was big enough for a turkey and everything else. They also sell cute 10 CF refridgerator freezers that wouldn’t take up too much energy. If you are planning to use it for cooking for parties the mini stove will be adequate for cooking pizza and keeping dishes warm. A microhood is also convinient for cooking popcorn and reheating leftovers. I am building the same set up in my basement and I actually am taking a small area for a full size stove and fridge, small sink, small dishwasher and a small counter. Ikea has a free downloadable software that you can use to get an idea of how your space is actually going to work. It is not that hard to do and you can get a general idea of the plan. You dont have to go with Ikea. The measurements of cabinets are somewhat standard and this will help put the kitchen together. Good luck.
Hi, I’m looking for any websites that have helpful hints, pictures, and possibly stylish themes to decorating a bathroom in a mobile home. Some of you may know a mobile home bathroom (not the master bath) is very very small, and quite hard to decorate. The floors are a grayish/tanish tile and the walls are white with a grayish/tanish design (over the white). I’m looking for stuff like shower curtains, small bathroom decoration things, stuff like that, that can fit in a small bathroom which are also stylish, without having to paint the walls and not have to crack my budget. Your answers are appreciated, thanks.
Stay simple. If you can find a grayish/tan shower curtain use that to blend into the walls, if not use white. Don’t overdecorate the room. You want things to blend and not accent. Do not highlight or contrast anything.

We are a family of 4 and only have 1 bathroom. I would like to add another. If we do the work ourselves and don’t use the most expensive materials (cheap but nice) on average what would that cost? I want it big enough for a sink, toilet, and shower.
typic. in remodeling your best to just go with a general quick way to figure it out. its ushally about $80 a sq foot to remodel. bathrooms r more expensive because of toles and fixtures. if your room is 8×10 you have 80 sq. feet. 80sq. ft. X $80 is $6400 for the remodel. then add about 25% for a bathroom so like $8000 for that size room
