How much do bathroom renovations cost?
28 May 2010
How much does it cost to redo a small 3 piece bathroom if you do a modest remodel and buy fixtures from a place like home depot or lowes? The bathroom needs a tub, vanity, floors, and I think it would be nice to move the toilet.
A good rule of thumb is to spend 5%-10% of your homes value on a remodel. Or figure 5-7k for a DIY or 10-15k with a contractor.
If I may, if you are gutting the bathroom you may want to look in to putting down a waterproofing membrane over the cement board (like Schluter’s Kerdi systerm). Also look into the Schluter Ditra underlayment for tiles or the Dural Durabase system (its like Ditra except it has a mesh top)… And if you are going to do a gut job you may want to add some of the luxury items like heated floor… you obviously don’t have to and it will cost extra, but it is one of those things that if you want it you may as well do it while the room is torn up.

2010 May 28 2it all depends on what you want, the size of your bathroom, a small bathroom could cost as low as 4000, if you have a tub expect to pay at least 5 or 6 thousand, mainly it depends on what you want, like do you want granite counter tops, is there one sink, or do you want the faucet on the wall with one of those sinks that look like a big glass bowl sitting on a counter, an undermount, and toilets, you want some cheap toilet or a one piece, a low boy or a TOTO supreme, how about a bidet, or one of those japanese toilets that warm your butt cheeks, and wash your backside in case of disaster. the bottom line is you can get a cheap or decent job done for a low cost or a really good job and increase the value of living. also depends if you want a cast iron porcelain finished tub or fiberglass, tile or molding.

i would call some plumbers and gather some free estimates, and you could check with home depot, maybe lowes.

2010 May 28 3it depends on the cost of the bits you put in. If you do it yourself it will save you heaps on labour but it will take longer. You can get quotes on having it done quickly but it is expensive. Good luck however even if you do a bare minimum……replace wash basin for instance to start with will give you incentive. A disposal store or a seconds building store may have good things at great discounts. The new look glass wall tiles are to die for…..

2010 May 29 4i read an article in a builders magazine a while back and it said the average cost to remodel a average bath was 10 thousand dollars. of course it would depend on your situation and i guess this figure is an overall average from lots of jobs. you say move the toilet…. if concrete is involved so will be a jack hammer etc etc $$$$$$

With that in mind, I’m really reluctant to attempt to give you an average figure here on Yah, as, really, with ballpark figures, you are not any better than when you were without them–they’re unreliable: What costs a lot in one area may actually be a bargain in another.
So, DC, you really need a local bathroom remodeling contractor (who can easily do the remodeling of your bathroom’s tub, vanity, floors and relocation of the toilet) to give you the local rate for this project. Fortunately, there are plenty of local bathroom remodeling contractors seeking to give free estimates with no obligation, and taking advantage of this is the consumer-smart way to go about finding an accurate answer to your question. It’s important that you get a local estimate and not rely on guesses found here on Yah because, again, the cost of material and labor greatly varies by location.
If you negotiate well with the contractor and he buys the materials (i.e., the fixtures and other bathroom remodeling materials, etc.) for you, you may try to have him pass the discounted cost of the materials to you in exchange for giving him the installation job, as usually contractors get discounts (called "contractor’s discounts" / "contractor’s price") when buying from suppliers because of the many purchases they make as required by their jobs..
As I said, free estimates from local bathroom remodeling contractors are the key to your success in this home improvement project of yours. Here’s a great link to a handyman site that offers free very resourceful information to assist you in determining the cost of your project, and, ultimately, selecting a local bathroom remodeling contractor in an effort to get the best deal for you:
